Recycling rates are increasing and residents are doing a fabulous job with their recycling habits but we are not stopping here!
Re3 are now launching a new opportunity to residents who are visiting re3 Recycling Centres, to recycle rigid plastic items such as: plastic buckets, crates, bins, storage boxes, garden furniture, pipes, toys or plastic plant pots. When visiting the sites, please look around or speak to the member of staff to locate the new bays.
- All the rigid plastic waste is recycled in a closed loop cycle in UK & European facilities, producing a high-quality, almost 100%-pure secondary raw material for the plastics industry, for its further use in: pipelines, the automotive industry, construction materials, furniture and household items.
- It is estimated that every 100 tonnes of recycled rigid plastic can contribute to avoid 250,000 kg CO2 emissions, which is equivalent to the consumption of 180 cars.
- Watch the video to see how the rigid plastic is recycled.
What Happens To Our Plastic Bottles, Pots, Tubs And Trays?
We are concerned that some recent news covered in the national media has led to claims that plastic, in particular, collected for recycling, could end up at illegal landfill sites abroad or being incinerated instead of recycled. That is not the case for re3.
- The re3 partnership undertakes regular audits on the companies employed to reprocess recyclables, providing reassurance that recyclable material is being processed ethically and environmentally.
- All plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays sorted at the Reading Material Recycling Facility is fully processed in UK facilities.
- The plastic is washed, shredded and pelletised ready for use by manufacturing companies, to produce more plastic items, saving important energy and resources.
- re3 has seen an – 82% increase in plastic recycling over a three-year period reflecting positively on residents’ commitments and public involvement in tackling plastic pollution.
